Through my research on barriers for foreign nationals operating in the South African cultural sector, there have been four major pillars that have emerged. These are:
- Economic
– Monetary aspects - Social
– Socio-cultural aspects - Legal
– Laws and regulations - The art world/Gatekeeping
– Aesthetic qualities and top-down business and gallery structures
These pillars stand as the four major themes in which barriers for foreign nationals are connected. Each box represents a challenge or obstacle that foreign nationals navigate when moving to a new country. Some of these can be overcome, whereas others are permanent hindrances.
