In this podcast, I try to fulfill the obligation of presenting the digital history of my research in the form of a multimedia product.
In doing so, I begin with my personal history in the country of Mauritania, starting in 2019. The first time I heard about Mauritania in my life was from a friend who said that the country was known for its religious scholarship and that one could study the Koran there without disturbance. When I also heard about the cheap French language courses, I was hooked and the decision was clear. Without any major prior knowledge, I lived in Nouakchott for 3 months in 2019. Also in 2019, I made my first contacts in the local hip hop scene, starred in a sitcom, and traveled to larger parts of the country. Furthermore, I also learned about the political problems, alleged assassinations of well-known rappers who now had to live in exile, racism and slavery. Since then, Mauritania has never quite let me go and my research in 2023 in the form of a documentary about hip hop and political taboos offered me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge and to finally be able to ask others the questions I was asking myself for years…
In this podcast I describe the circumstances of my research, basic lines of conflict in Mauritania and my own position in the research. Three interviews are also presented in parts. I also mention the things that still need to be done. The research is far from over….
